Americans are the citizens of the United States of America. Although direct citizens make up the majority of Americans, many people can claim an American nationality and identity. National identity can be described as a system of characteristics and values in a nation, American identity has been based historically on race, ethnicity, religion and culture. somebody's identity and evolution is impacted by a variety of internal and external factors like society, family, ethnicity, race, culture, media and life experiences, and those things help people decided and figure out how they identify, so what it means to identify as an American, to be or to become an American, a person does not have to be any particular national, linguistic, religious, or ethnic background.
being an American is a commitment to the political and abstract ideals of liberty, equality, and republicanism. The set of values and beliefs and the commitment to the United States of America is what makes someone an American. Americans value independence and determination, placing importance on the role of the individual in shaping in one's own identity, and the commitment to the laws of the United States and the set of beliefs that are inflected on Americans is what makes someone truly an American.
And the reasoning for what's previously stated, is that what unites all Americans together is their shared values of republicanism, liberty work ethic and equality and the mutual commitment and a joint pride of being and feeling like an American is what makes someone an American.
